Could not fault anything. paulinerylands2025-04-11Verified Wonderful Place This hotel is like home from home and because I travel a lot and stay in corporate hotels, which can be very sterile, Downham was a great find and I would recommend it to anyone who wants peace and quiet. A great location for the surrounding areas too. Kevin Blake2025-04-06Verified Outstanding Venue We held an event for 86 people in November in their Marquee which was a resounding success so we decided to go back there for another event for 34 people in their newly refurbished North Wing Restaurant. Absolutely perfection. Room layout first class. Staff, they couldn’t do enough for us. Not just on the day but on the build up. So accommodating. Thank you to Christina, Debra, Ben and Andy in particular however the rest of the staff were first class. As for the chef, wow everyone said how good the food was. Highly recommend going there. Can also say others who attended and never been there before said they will definitely return with their family and friends. andy_jones5952025-04-03Verified Special place that we were fortunate to find. Needed to visit the area from Nottingham to attend a family funeral. Search on the internet helped us spot this Hotel and BOOKING DIRECT for a two night stay with breakfast secured the best price. Lovely setting, peaceful, very comfortable spacious bedrooms and welcoming attentive staff. The Hotel and rooms are decorated to a high standard. Breakfast is individually prepared and served in a lovely conservatory. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return again at the drop of a hat if we are back in the locality. nhu502025-02-15Verified Cupid’s arrow! Arrived just before lunchtime on Valentine’s Day. The food was divine and the service first class. Our room was really comfy and spacious. Pity it didn’t have a bath, but it provided the perfect sanctuary for a peaceful and relaxing retreat. The evening meal was equally tasty and the heart shaped spectacles provided, were a fun addition along with the helium balloons floating up to the ceiling, were a tasteful touch, informally creating a sense of occasion. Breakfast was great and the checking out process easy and straightforward. We only live down the A127, but Downham Hall is the perfect overnight stay, when you need a classy change of scenery. Janey10002025-02-14Verified Very disappointing experience ... I wish I could base this review on my stay at Downham Hall, but unfortunately we didn’t get that far… In October 2024, I booked a double room for one night on 27 Dec. This was to provide accommodation for myself and my partner whilst visiting family nearby over the Christmas period. A deposit was paid at the time of booking. The day before our stay (Boxing Day) I received a voice mail from Christina, advising that the room we were due to occupy was experiencing plumbing issues – the sanitary ware in the room was intermittently overflowing and although she had contacted a plumber, she wasn’t convinced the problem could be resolved in time for our stay. I phoned Christina and discussed the issue in more detail, expressing our disappointment that we were due to be travelling some distance for our stay at Downham Hall just a few hours later. Christina maintained her stance that she had no idea if the plumbing issues would affect our stay or not – and because of the Christmas period, she could not guarantee a plumber attending by the next day (which we totally understood). What concerned me most was Christina’s attitude – completely non-plussed about the impact to our Christmas plans with family. Her response was basically that we could take the chance if we wanted to, but she couldn’t guarantee that we wouldn’t have an overflowing shower or toilet! We asked if another room was available. She said no. I reminded her that her booking had been made some two months earlier, and asked if ours was truly the last reservation to be made. She admitted that it was not, but other guests were either paying more or staying longer!!!! The idea of staying in a room overflowing with sanitary waste was not appealing and after some debate, she agreed to refund our payment and cancel the reservation. Despite this, I received several automated emails saying how much Downham Hall were looking forward to welcoming us for our stay! But no refund… When I raised this with Christina, I received a very curt message saying she was trying to juggle “emails, breakfast, phone calls, emergency plumbing and housekeeping.” She attributed this to having given her staff a well-earned break but as a business owner myself, it is the responsibility of the proprietor to ensure that staff levels should be maintained in keeping with customer bookings. The refund appeared the following day. It was at this point I realised Christina had refunded the total amount for the booking, when I had only paid a deposit. I immediately flagged this up to Christina, asking for her bank details so I could reimburse the over-payment. Christina thanked me for my honesty and assured me she would send the relevant details. This was on 29th December. It was on 27th January, nearly a month later, that Christina emailed me her bank details. I was busy with work and personal commitments so flagged the email for my attention at my earliest convenience. Barely a week later, Christina was chasing me for the payment, despite the fact it had taken her four times as long to supply her bank details! And even more so that it was my own honesty which had highlighted the overpayment in the first place!! I’m afraid my interactions with Christina have eliminated any prospect of me ever again booking to stay at Downhall Hall, despite the glowing reviews and recommendations. Fortunately, we found alternative accomdation in an inn nearby, and this will be our venue of choice for future stays! Marion09102025-02-14Verified One of our most delicious afternoon teas We have just had a most delicious afternoon tea at Downham Hall. We would go as far to say it is one of the best we have had and we have eaten a fair few. From the lovely sandwiches to the freshly baked scones and to the little cakes which had been made so exquisitely it was all lovely. We were offered endless pots of tea and we accompanied it all with a glass of Prosecco. Considering the beautiful surroundings and the quality of the food it was all very reasonably priced. We would certainly recommend Downham hall and will return very soon to try a lunch. Jen M2025-02-11Verified The best location for my Yoga Retreat I held my Yoga Retreat Day at Downham Hall in February and it was the perfect day! From the setting, to the co-ordinating, the support and the gorgeous food - I could t fault it! Everyone who attended commented on what a gorgeous place it was. It’s so accessible yet it feels like you’ve escaped the busy life and found the most peaceful setting. Debra was so supportive and helpful from start to finish and I cannot wait to return soon for another retreat day. Thank you so much!! Jen - Mums’ Yoga Club
